Set File Type Association Default
I just wanted to try the Nitro PDF Reader to see if I liked it. Now it has changed the default file type for all my files with the .pdf extension to, "Nitro PDF Document." How do I change that to a file type name of my own choosing? I have changed the "Opens With" file association, using, "my computer/tools/folderoptions" but the default file type name association was not changed. I am running Win XP Pro sp3 and all updates installed.

Every file type on a computer has the ability to be associated with a program, this allows you to quickly double click on the specific file type (eg: .pdf) and open automatically in your desired application. During our Installation process you will have been given the ability to set this association automatically to Nitro Reader or Nitro Pro.
If you have not done this, or may have done this by mistake you are able to simply rectify this using one of the solutions below.
Solution
Changing the default file association can be done in a number of ways, a few of these are outlined below.
From within Windows Explorer
1. Locate any PDF file within Windows Explorer
2. Right click on the file and select Open With
3. Now navigate down the extended context menu to Choose Default Application
4. A new dialogue box will open allowing you to select the desired application to open this file type with, you may need to browse for your application if it is not there.
5. Once you have chosen your application, ensure you have checked the option to Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.
6. Clicking ok will complete the association and open future PDF file-types with your chosen application. You can follow this process with any file tpye
From within Nitro Pro & Reader
1. Launch Nitro Pro or Reader
2. Navigate to the File Menu
3. Click Preferances
4. This will launch a new dialogue, here ensure you have General selected on the left hand listbox.
5. On the right hand side you will have a button under Default Viewer click this button to associate Nitro Pro or Reader with the PDF filetype for you.

Dear Michael,
To change your file association, you can do this:
How do set all files to Open with Nitro PDF
First RIGHT click on any PDF you have on your desktop
Next LEFT click on "Open With" and then LEFT click on "choose default application"
This will pop a new window
Now LEFT click Nitro Pro and Left click the checkbox to place a checkmark in the "always select" box.
Now just replace Nitro with whatever you want to open your files with.
Cheers,

This does not answer the question. The is NOT file open with assoociation, the question IS as follows:
I installed the Nitro PDF Reader. Now it has changed the default "Type of File" under file properties for all my files with the .pdf extension to, "Nitro PDF Document" and changed all of my PDF file icons. How do I change "Type of File" baccl to Adobe? I have changed the "Opens With" file association, using, "my computer/tools/folderoptions" but the default "Type of File" and file icons were not changed. I am running Win XP Pro sp3 and all updates installed.- view 2 more comments

1Hey Everyone,
Can you try the below instructions?
You can reset your file association with the following steps:
1) Right click on any PDF.
2) Place the mouse over "open with", and select “choose default program...”
3) Choose desired application to open the .pdf filetype.
4) Check the box for “Always use selected program..”
5) Click “OK” to close the dialog box, and save your settings.
Your file association has now been updated.
Additional details on setting file association: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859.
Thanks! -

This Michael again. The problem is solved. I did one thing. Another thing happened, for a reason I am guessing, but not entirely sure of.
1). I use the file management program Directory Opus. In that program, perhaps it can be done with Explorer as well. I unchecked the File Type column item so the that property is no longer listed and I no longer see it.
2). Also I think that in upgrading Adobe Reader sometime back, it set itself as the file type to be shown when the type property is listed. But I no longer see that either since I do not show the file type any way. My preference is the old fashion file extension which is what I show.
Many thanks to all who responded. -
-
This could be confusing to anyone who is not a Directory Opus user. In Windows explorer Adobe Reader uses the same file extension as Nitro PDF. The extension is *.pdf

I removed a Trial version of Nitro, including any stray files but when I convert my Framemaker files to pdfs they still come out as Nitro pdfs and unreadable by others.
I need a solution fast.

Removed Nitro trial version but can not create Adobe PDF from Framemaker.-
Hello Sophie,
I wanted to add your feedback here.
"It had nothing to do with file association, that solution did not work. It turned out that Nitro corrupted Adobe Acrobat's database. I had to delete the database and reboot my computer to re-establish the database."
Thanks for the clarification. This may help someone else using Framemaker. -

I downloaded your free version. Then I decide to go back to adobe because others could not open yours. This may not be the problem but want to change back. When I added yours it converted all pdf's that were in my files and now I want to convert them back. How do I do that. I read the other solution but mine are still all marked Nitro pdf format. Please help me resolve this. It might be because I did not fully understand the other person's email. I have redownloaded adobe but that is all the steps I have taken.
At this point I will say I like your product and it did what I downloaded it for. Which was to convert pdf to jpg. Which I found hard to find a program that would do that until I found your. So I am please but am too used to adobe to switch everything else.
Lookig forward to a solution.

I had a similar problem. The best solution I found was to do a system restore to the day before I down loaded Nitro. All my PDF formats were restored

Thanks Gary
This did not work for me as it keep saying can't be restored to that date. I have tried all dates before and after it and nothing works.
In addition to haveing to open my files just to be able to read them by right clicking then choosing adobe reader the file in my-pictures are not labeld anymore.
I can't believe a company can put something out that can mess up your whole computer and do nothing about it.
However I do appreciate your help it just did not work for me.
Thanks

Hey Linda -- sorry to hear of your recent troubles, I know how computer problems like these can be frustrating.
If you wish to set Adobe Reader as your default PDF viewer, open Adobe Reader and follow these steps:
1. Click on Edit > Preferences
2. In the General category, click the 'Select Default PDF Handler' button
3. Choose Adobe Reader and click click Apply -
-
This makes sense that it might work. However I went to the general category and could not find anything that siad Select Default PDF Handler button.
Here are the button I have. The ones with a x are the one with check marks.
If you can offer any more help I would appreciate it.
x Automatically save document changes to temp file
x Automatically detext URLS from text
x Open cross-document links in same window
x Save as optimized for web view
Emit pass through postscript when printing
x enable print review
Use single-key accelerators to access tools
Enable tex selection for hand tool
Disable Edit warnings
x show documents in toolbar.
I received another email suggesting how to remove file from the acrobat organizer folder. I do not feel compentent enough to do that one. I did another suggestion and now I can't download anything or open lots of web sites. My security is all messed up to go with my pdf's being messed up.
Hope yo can help me.
Thanks in advance.

Nitro employees,
Your solutions don't solve ALL the problems. All of my own pdf documents still open in Adobe, which is what I want, but if I try to open a pdf file from the internet, they now ONLY open as Nitro pdfs. This is not acceptable, as it does not allow me to copy and paste from these docs. Please tell me how I can make sure that ALL pdfs, including those I access on the internet, open with Adobe and NOT Nitro.

Hi Marie,
It sounds like you have installed our Browser plugin's. These allow you to view PDF files from with your browser. You are able to disable these, I will need to confirm what browser you are currently using so I can give you some details instructions on how to do this.
Thanks,

I have uninstalled nitro pro and my files are associated with adobe but still I am getting the message to buy nitro pro on all my pages please tell me how to remove it. I promise not to use your software anytime anywhere and i will also recommend other people not to use ur software.
-
You have a couple of options here, this occurs when you edit a file using a trial version of Nitro Pro.
To remove these there are a couple of options;
a) I can extend a trial version of our product so you can remove these, and save them, note that using this trial outside the period will place this back on any documents you edit.
b) If there is only a few documents that have this placed on them you can submit these and I can remove this water mark.
Let me know how you would like to proceed.
Thanks,

When you remove files from the Acrobat Organizer folder, you force Acrobat to rebuild the Organizer database. This process replaces any damaged files in the Organizer that may be causing the error message.
To remove the files from the Acrobat Organizer folder:
1.Choose Start > Run.
2.In the Open text box, type:%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\7.0\Organizer70.
3.Delete or move all filesfrom this directory.
Solution3: Remove the files from the Updaterfolder.
You may receive this error message after a failed update, indicating that the files in the Updater folder are corrupted.
To remove the files from the Updater folder:
1. Choose Start > Run.
2. In the Open text box, type:%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\7.0\Updater.
3. Delete or move all the files fromthis directory.
