Transparency in PDF files doesn't render correctly
When I open PDF files that include transparency, it appears that Nitro Reader doesn't support the transparency. It just renders objects on-top of each other.

We have added support for transparency in Nitro PDF Reader 2, which was released today.
This includes support for:
- All blend modes
- All transparency groups
- Text knockout
Thank you to you all for being so patient in waiting for this functionality to be completed. And we understand those users who couldn't wait any longer and had to move on... -
Hi All,
Nitro Reader 2 has been released today which resolved this and many other issues.
For a more in depth run down on some of the new features check out the blog at http://blog.nitropdf.com/index.php/20...
Look forward to hearing your feedback!

Transparency isn't currently supported in our PDF renderer.
Our development team is already working hard at it and will be available in a future update of Nitro Reader. -

In the 64 bit version, I opened a restaurant menu, and the graphics in it have gray squares (filled in) around them. I opened it in Nitro professional, and it renders the file correctly. I thought this might be a highlighting of selectable images, but couldn't find an option to turn it off. A bug?

This is due to transparency not yet being supported in our PDF renderer. We are working on it, and will be supported in a release a little down the track.

I have some PDF files with embedded Tablet PC ink which don't display properly in Nitro, but do in Adobe Reader and PDF Annotator. Instead of just seeing the ink writing/drawing this ink layer sits in a white rectangle which blocks all the page content beneath.

NitroPDF doesn't handle transparent fills as well as Adobe Reader. Also hatch fills tend to be too heavy handed. See for yourself from any of the maps at http://www.environmentyukon.ca/maps/

Our developers tested this with an updated internal build and it seems to be displaying correctly now.

Is that PDF file available on the web somewhere so we can take a look? That should display correctly in Nitro Reader (doesn't look like any special blending is used there), but would like to take a look to be sure.
If it's not on the net, you could provide it to us at http://dropbox.yousendit.com/nitropdf -

Is this issue related to layers not being displayed correctly or not being able to hide/show separate layers? I haven't used layers too much but it's really useful to show a client different variations of a logo or business card.

Hi Jared,
What I believe you are talking about is 'Optional Content Groups' (this is the formal technical name), which allows you to display and hide groups of content. We plan on adding support for reading OCG in a future release of Nitro Reader.
"An OCG object represents an optional content group in a PDF file. Content in the file can belong to one or more optional content groups. Content belonging to one or more OCGs is referred to as optional content and its visibility is determined by the states (ON or OFF) of the OCGs to which it belongs."
The problem that this post is referring to is related to how we display content on the screen when multiple objects are overlapping each other -- that is transparency.
"Transparency in PDF files refers to objects on a page, such as images or text, which are transparent or ’show through’. Transparency is typically used for shadow effects, to lighten (parts of) images so that the text on top remains readible, to make objects fade into another object or to create a tint of a certain color" -

I believe this rendering problem is due to problems with transparency, though am not sure. This is with the Evernote Essentials ebook (http://nerdgap.com/evernote-essentials); looks great in Adobe Reader, not so much in Nitro Reader:

Here's another similar one, this time the eBook "Windows 7 Inside Out" from http://nerdgap.com/evernote-essentials. It doesn't show the content of textboxes with extra info and tips as you can see in this shot; Adobe Reader on the left displays fine.

Thanks for the additional posts. We are still working on the transparency update. -

Just deleted my separate post about this issue, where all jpgs showed up in black
Unresolved in Nitro pdf reader 1.2.0.11.-
Hello-
Since you removed it, you have the ability to add it back. Please do so, if it's not resolved. -

In most PDFs it's showing the background image on top of the text, thus making it impossible to read. For instance, the "getting started.pdf" from DropBox. Also, is not handlign very well the transparencies on images for either background nor decoration.

Tint screens in PDF files show up as solid black. Reader v1.3.0.24
Compare the 2 files that I uploaded. 1 is shown in Nitro and the other in Acrobat Reader.

Dear Allen,
This issue is part of the rending issue we are working on with transparencies.
Thanks for your patience and feedback.

Wonderful software. Congratulations!!!
In fact, so far, I have found only one missing resource: the support for images with "transparency" (or transparent layers) in the PDF.
I believe it is a very necessary (and missing) rendering resource, and not a feature. You guys should look into that, especially for PDF's created from InDesign and other advanced DTP software.
Besides of that, so far everything is great!
Keep up the good work. I am looking forward for a new version with this feature implemented.

Well, they said about 2 months ago that they were "working on this", lets then have some faith on them! ;) After all, this software is a great piece of work, regardless of the lack of rendering capability of transparent layers.
Well, I know it is an important and very necessary feature, and that there are thousands of algorithms available on-line showing how to render transparent elements, but they must have a good reason for not have got it working yet at this point (so I like to believe)...
I just hope they will get to it sooner or later (hopefully sooner, because I would hate to see all their great work being classified as "insufficient" or "not good" just because they lack the importance of implementing transparent elements rendering).
Still waiting for it... But I would be happy to see a "road-map" with this feature listed in it or, at least, hear from someone an explanation of "why" it is not there yet...
Any words?-
We'll have an internal build ready for testing by the end of December. So we'll have a release for public consumption in Q1, 2011.
If you want to know why it can take some time, I suggest reading the 'Transparency' section in the PDF spec at bedtime :-) It really isn't simple at all, we just need some time.
Really appreciate everyone's patience with this, you guys are the best. -
-
Well, it's already Q2 now. Any plan?

Chris,
Very nice!!! Great news!!!! That is what we were expecting from this great team: some word about the subject! It is great to know that a great software has an even greater team behind it. You can count on my support!
In regards to the "transparency rendering", I have implemented it in some situations... In games, in graphical applications and in multi-platform applications. I am not sure about the PDF standards, but I can't imagine it being a so amazingly impossible task, even because other less impressive software have implemented it flawlessly. Nevertheless, I understand that sometimes what seems not to be a complex implementation can become a huge challenge depending on how it is done.
Please, understand that features request and discussions about the software development shouldn't be received as discouragement. Other than that, when people talk about your work and push the team for more it is because the software has been accepted and it is an absolute success.
Almost all my friends are no longer using Acrobat and have migrated to Nitro PDF Reader... And, if it depends on me, lots of other people will also learn about Nitro and make the change.
Keep up the great work and thank you for everything you have done so far!-
Thanks Julio :-)

8 months and still no fix? Wait for Q1 2011???
Your software has a lot of promise, but I think you need to wait for BASIC PDF functionality before you do anything. Why does EVERY OTHER pdf reader, including the ultra-slim Sumatra, render correctly but yours does not? If it is such a technical hurdle why can EVERYONE else do it correctly?
At least be honest with your beta testers that your PDF software does not comply with the PDF specs.
I liked the interface--I would actually pay for this software if it worked. But I have to wonder why other features keep being added while there are still basic rendering problems.
What is the point in auto-down power windows if your car has no engine?
Good news--there are many PDF alternatives ... and except for Nitro they ALL ACTUALLY RENDER PDFs!
My advice to potential users--stop wasting time waiting for an engine .. just go and get one of the many other excellent, free PDF readers ... they actually work. -

Is there any update on an ETA for this to be fixed? I'm battling with 250 users who just want Acrobat Reader back, and I would rather not give it to them.
Rob
Rob, it makes me sad to hear of your situation, especially considering the investment you made in deploying Nitro Reader across your group of users.
Please send me an e-mail to chris.dahl@nitropdf.com, I'd like to work with you so you can make an informed decision.
