I found a work around!!!!! So, I still get the error, but after you get the error, there is a log file in the folder you are saving to, which is named what you are calling the file, but with a .log extension, and points to the directory where the temp files are created. Go to this directory and look for the large file created at the same time and rename the extension to .pdf, then it opens fine. Voila! It is not a pretty solution, but it works.
To answer a previous question about why you would want to create a PDF out of a PDF, there are a few cases so far for me. One is that the PDF creation processes vary in size tremendously. The Primo PDF took a multi MB PDF down to 40K, and added security, with the same resolution. The other case was a PDF that needed to be separated into 2 pieces, the body and appendix. With Primo, I could print the pages I needed and create a new document. The last case may be a security hole or work around, but if there is a password protected PDF file that you need to unprotect, you can print it with primo and change the permissions.
In my case , the file shown in the log below was xh5tetuf.rnd, and I replaced the .rnd with .pdf. The extension name in the temp directory is different every time, but the file is easy to identify.
My log file looks like this:

datability.inc October 14, 2010 18:32I have a PDF that opens with the message "(SECURED) at the top following the filename. I can print the file on a printer but I get the -8 error when I try to print in latest version of PRIMO. Why? What can I do? It is a file that allows me to print it - so no idea why this restriction would be appropriate."EditDeleteRemove

This happens to me when I print from a PDF file with security using Primo PDF. If the PDF files does not already have security, it prints/creates the PDF file with no problem.
-
You need to check to see what type of security is placed on the document. From the sounds of things, the security restriction is preventing you from creating the PDF.

The security settings allow me to print to a "real" printer, why can't I print to the PrimoPDF "virtual" printer?

I'd send my doc, but it's 24MB and at my upload speed, it would take forever to send. Maybe one of the others have a smaller file.

I am also facing this issue...
You can get a security enabled PDF from this URL

Just out of curiosity, is there any reason why you want to reprint a PDF to a PDF driver? Are you guys wanting to save the data in the form fields?

I am trying to take 2 PDF documents that consist of over 200 pages and reduce it to the 5 pages that my customers need to configure their product. I have done this before without the error but I lost the document and need to recreate it. It lets me print the 1st page but will not let me print any after. I have the security options turned off so is should not be a security issue.
-

I do this in order to merge two documents. I send out contracts in PDF form. So I save all but the signature page from the original file. Then after the boss signs, I want to be able to append that page to the existing PDF to send to the contractor. When the contractor send the signed last page back then I do the same thing, save a pdf of all but the signature page and then append the new signature page to it.
This worked perfectly for me until today. Now suddenly I'm getting the error "PDF Conversion Failed: PDF conversion failed: -8" I know this is an old thread but I'm not finding any real solutions posted, just questions. -
-
-
-
Hi, I would like to fill the form or any other similar form i.e, a fillable pdf and print it and store as another file which would have the data that i entered.
-
In this case, I recommend you use Nitro Reader. It's the only free PDF viewer out there at the moment that will allow you to fill out a form and save it. There are also many other features.

Nothing is printing, and I get the same error message. I cannot email you a file since I don't have one. I am not using the security feature. Help!

When converting with Nitro Reader, you can select the quality of the PDF by going to the printer properties via the Print dialog.

I've been printing from a PDF (to save filled information in existing blank PDF forms) for over a year now with PrimoPDF, but all of the sudden today it is giving me this same error. I've checked the folder where I'm trying to save the document, but there are no .log files in the folder, so I can't even do the work around. What caused this? How do I fix it?

In an earlier post Binh, Scott Pearce mentioned a work-around that involves a LOG file - but none of us can find the log file Scott mentioned.

The log file should be located in the same directory as output PDF file. However you need have the option "Save PostScript after conversion" & "Save conversion logs" under Options > Troubleshoot checked before converting.

My problem with this seems to have solved itself. Suddely I can print to pdf using Primo again and not get the number 8 error. I have not idea why.
-
-
I have a similar but probably not the same problem. When I print to pdf using the primopdf "printer", I used to be able to print without problems. Recently, on 2 different PC's, I am not able to print anymore. It gets stuck on the PrimoPdf window. When I click "create pdf" it does not respond anymore. When I look at the printer status window, the document status says "printing" but nothing happens for a long time. This is really odd since this also happened to the PC I'm using today when yesterday I can print with no problem. Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem, with just one document. It is a PowerPoint presentation; when I try to save as a PDF, I receive the error "Conversion to PDF Failed: PDF Conversion Failed -8". Other users can create PDF from this document just fine.
I have installed the latest version of PrimoPDF. PC is XP SP3, with all updates (checked when this problem started). Office 2007.

I tried doing a search for PrimoSet.xml and I couldn't find any files with that name, I also didn't see such a file in my documents folder. I don't understand where I should look for the second location. I'm using Windows 7, could you give me a more detailed explanation where the file I should delete is?

I just tried this and it did not work either. All I am doing is trying to convert a simple Excel spreadsheet into a PDF. Nothing fancy and no security features embedded in the sheet.

I am having this problem too. It happens everytime I try to convert any kind of file (.doc .xls etc). I have three computers running this software, but the one with Windows 7 is the only one that gives me that error msg. Could it be the OS?
-
-
I'm having the same issue at Ariella Mansfield but have windows xp professional. This is a new error showing up about a month ago, but I have been using this program to print/append for 2-3 years now without any issues up until now
-
-
I found and deleted the PrimoSet.xml file, but everytime I attempt to print and append to an existing file I get the conversion error and the Primo.xml file has returned. I have been using using Adobe 6.0 to scan documents then append to existing PDF files for 2-3 years using PrimoPDF with no problems. it seems that when I recently downloaded NitroReader the problem with the conversion showed up.
-
-
I am follwing the PrimoPDF instructions (Here's how it's done: 1.Open a document to convert to PDF and select Print, then choose the PrimoPDF printer and click OK. 2.From the PrimoPDF window, click Options. 3.Click Save As, highlight the file you wish to add pages to, and click OK. 4.Under If PDF exists, choose Append to Existing and click OK. 5.Lastly, click Create PDF - PrimoPDF will take care of the rest!)
and i keep getting the following error message: "Conversion to PDF Failed: PDF Conversion Failed: -8"
Any thoughts on what the error means or why the conversion/combining is not working?

Your document is secured and restricts users making changes to the document.

I do not understand your answer.. I though your software allow to print to a pdf file.. What does it change if the pdf is secured or not?

Hi Binh, You can reproduce the problem by trying to print to PrimoPDF printer a range of page of the document I send you. I had the same problem since years when I was under win XP, Vista and now Win 7. I have PrimoPDF 5.1.0.2.. I would be glad to hear there is a solution..
-
Hello Dominic-
Can you send the document again? I'd like to try and test further.

Hello Dominic-
What ranges of pages are you trying to print? Please be specific what you are attempting.

Sorry if I did not detail ennough.. I got the problem when I try to print to PDF one page (any page), a range of page (any range) or the entire document (the 464 pages..). For example, try to print to the PrimoPDF printer page 10 to 25 of the document and you will get the error (I just get it again while typing my message..). Let me know if you need more details. Thanks.
-
Hello Dominic-
I was able to reproduce. The process for usage here is the problem. You want to extract pages from an existing PDF file, not create a new PDF file. I would suggest you use the Nitro Trial, and extract the pages.

Hi Kyle, It works with NitroPDF.. Will you make it works in PrimoPDF as well?
Thanks-
Hello-
This isn't really the way Primo is meant to be used. It's not an extraction tool for PDF files. Nitro PRO is designed for this higher functionality.

I understand.. I tought it was a printer driver in wich we can send what we want.. It works fine with most of others files types.. But I'm still curious to know what is the problem to print a range of page from a PDF using PrimoPDF? In my head, it is the exact same thing than printing a few page of a .DOC document.. Thanks for your explanation!

Hello Dominic-
The driver could be handling any number of things incorrectly. Really, what you want is the ability to extract the pages. This is much more efficient than printing a pdf of the chosen pages from a pdf file.
Let me know if I can clarify further. -

Can someone explain a little better what exactly the -8 error is? Does this have to do with content in the document; for example if I am trying to print a document that has pdf files embedded as images?
A more descriptive error code would really help when trying to figure out what is going wrong.- view 1 more comment

You don't seem to be understanding the question.
This error (the -8 error) seems to be somewhat common. I would like to know what this -8 error code suggests as the failure point during pdf generation. I cannot seem to find any documentation on the error codes and troubleshooting procedures suggested by said codes.
For specifics on my problem, I am using pdf files as images in a large document, as that is the easiest way to transfer the information from the programs used by the engineers. I would like to know if using pdf files as images in my page layout program would cause the -8 error when I try to produce a pdf by printing to PrimoPDF. If that's not what's causing the -8 error, can you give some other suggestions as to what is causing these errors. I don't have time to test every possible cause myself, as this document takes up to 15 minutes to print - only to get a non-descriptive error code. -
-
I understand your frustration. It sounds like you want to extract content out of a PDF file. Printing to pdf with Primo to extract data doesn't work well, and is a procedure the driver wasn't designed to do. Can you accomplish the same tasks with Extraction in the Nitro PRO product?

Yes, the base file is a PDF. I often need to send by mail just a page or 2 to a client of mine. What I do now is print those 2 pages, scan it to PDF et email it.. I just want to save time and paper by directly print the range of page I need from the base PDF file wich has 464 pages and quickly send it by email.. I really though PrimoPDF was the perfect print driver I needed..
-
Hello Dominic-
This is beyond the scope of the Primo Driver. You really need a PDF editor to efficiently accomplish this goal.
Thanks! -

I'm unable to convert a HTM file to PDF,. which is supposed to be one of the new features of V2 of the reader -- it can find the file, it prompts where to save it, seems to pause while converting but the file area just turns a flat grey and the prrogram ends -- no error messages, no files produced or anything.
Any ideas?

Hit this problem today with a protected Acrobat form that I needed to remove HR data from that is no longer accurate. Workaround was to print from Acrobat X to Windows XPS, then print from XPS VIewer to Primo - result is a perfect PDF document.
