This is mostly a "cosmetic" problem.
Open document A on Nitro Reader. Open document B on a new tab and try to save a copy ("Save as...") of document B overwritteing document A.
The error message is "sharing violation" which is probably not very useful for the average-user. Thank you for this great software!

Symptoms
When trying to save a PDF file in Nitro Pro or Nitro Reader the following message is displayed, with the text 'Sharing Violation'.
Causes
This is caused by another process accessing the file that Nitro Pro or Reader is trying to make changes to. This is often caused through the preview pane in Windows Explorer, however if the file is also open in an alternate application this error will be displayed.
Work Around
If this error is being caused through the preview pane you are able to simply unselect the file or close the preview pane as highlighted below.
To continue utilizing the preview pane and prevent this from occuring you can disable the Nitro Preview Handler from within Windows Explorer. You can use these steps.
1. Click one of the following: Tools -> Folder Options -> View or Organize ->Folder and search options.
2. Uncheck Show preview handlers in preview pane.
Resolution
Our Engineering team have resolved this issue in our most recent release of Nitro Pro 7.3 and Nitro Reader 2.3

Nitro Reader Installation - Download Page on our Reader Site.

7I just ran into this on Windows 7 with NItro Reader 1.4.0.11. It seems that I had opened the file be double-clicking on it in the windows explorer, which had the preview pane open. When I deselected the file in the explorer window, I was then able to save the file from Nitro Reader.
I must admit that the dialog box that simply says "Sharing Violation" is not very helpful.

Dear Jorge448,
I am unable to replicate this issue.
Can you please tell me what build you are using?
Also are the files residing in the same place? Same Drive?
Thanks!
Cheers,

Same here. I'm using version 1.3.1.1
I cannot edit (add text or notes) to any .pdf documents and save the changes without using the "save as" option to create a copy with a new and different file name. This, no matter if it's an existing .pdf file I've downloaded, or one I've created myself from a .jpg. I always get the error: "Sharing Violation."
This issue is a significant and constantly frustrating one to me. I love the Nitro PDF Reader; but I'm saddened at this extremely unfortunate glitch in an otherwise GREAT software program. This issue makes it too much of a hassle to even try to use it to add text or notes to a document you'd like to edit/update frequently (which was one of the main draws to this program for me). Is there a possibility of a fix? I'm sure many would be most grateful! -

I've updated to version 1.3.2.1, but the "Sharing Violation" issue still persists.

File Save-As ... another file instead of "Save" on original "locked file".
-
-
I am still getting the "Violation" warning even after re-saving. This has only occured since I upgraded.
-
Hello Pat,
The message means the file is in use from another location. Make sure you don't have it open in a preview window, or in a temp directory.
Is the "save as" method allowing you to save the document?
Thanks! -

This is a constant problem for me when I access a pdf from Windows Explorer (with the preview pane open). I often want to add an annotation using Nitro or tags using
Quick PDF tools. Before I can save the changes I have to unhighlight the file in Explorer. This gets really annoying.-
Hello David,
If the file is open in multiple locations you can get this failure. Do you need the file open in Windows Explorer and in Nitro? Does the error continue after you close Explorer?
Thanks! -
-
I use Explorer to find, preview and open pdf files. Having opened the pdf, I really don't want to then have to go back and unhighlight the file or worse shut down Explorer before I save the update. When I've finished the quick annotation in the PDF I want to close/save the file and return to the file list in Explorer. I can do exactly this with Word or Excel files or even jpg files and Paint.Net (so its not a Microsoft thing)
Yes I want the preview open in Windows Explorer (in the background) while I edit the pdf in Nitro.
No the error doesn't happen if I close Explorer, close the preview pane, OR move the highlight in Explorer to another file in the list.
By the way I love Nitro, use it many times a day and recommend it often. -

I saved a document as "password secured," with the intention of not having others be able to edit it, and when I tried to save the document, it said "sharing violation".
I was about to that successfully with the trial version, but not with the Professional Version. Please help.

Hi Kara,
Generally, if the file is opened in multiple locations you get this failure. Do you need the file open in Windows Explorer (possibly with Preview Pane) and in Nitro PDF Professional? Try it again with Windows Explorer closed. -

Whenever I try to save a comment on a pdf I get a sharing violation message. There are no other pdf's open and I am thinking it may have something to do with the file being in a folder using dropbox?

If I open a PDF directly from Outlook (by clicking the attachement), I get the message "access denied" if I try to modify and save the file. If I instead copy the attachment to desktop first, I can then modify and save the file w/o problem

When I open the preview window pane on Windows Explorer, AcroRd32.exe*32 task pops to life. So this is the cause of the error. To fix, the window pane preview would have to use nitro reader.
-
-
Hello,
It's possibly the cause. If you install the process explorer, it can show you what two processes are accessing the file.
Please file a support ticket if you'd like us to take a closer look.

When I've saved text to a PDF document and re-open it to add more, it tells me "sharing violation" and doesn't allow me to save the added text. What can I do about this?

Hi Yulanda, please try honkerdown's solution above
-
-
SEE honkerdown's comment above. when you click on a file in windows explorer in Windows 7 it creates a "Preview" of the file beside it. Nitro see this as the file is already in use by another person or program. Just close the windows explorer box or just click another file to remove the preview. It works every time!

When a file is closed, if there are unsaved changes, the program asks if you would like to save changes.
If you click yes and there is an error saving document changes (e.g., due to a file sharing violation), the program does not save changes and closes the document, at which point all changes are lost. The program should return to the document (ie, NOT close it) and allow the user to correct the error (e.g. sharing violation) so the changes can be saved. Most programs follows this functionality.

When I preview a PDF in Windows Explorer, Nitro thinks that the file open and gives me a sharing violation. Other programs are able to save the document even if I'm previewing it.

I'm using NitroPDF v.6 under XP, Vista and Win7. Really annoying: When I try to combine files and save them as a previously saved file, even if that file is not open in NitroPDF, I get a "Sharing Violation" error. This does not happen with any version of Adobe Acrobat I have used. Am I doing something wrong or is there a solution or workaround?

Regardless of the PDF, whenver I make a change (e.g., highlighting, adding a note, addin g text, etc), I cannot save. If attempt to save the file, it will give the error notice "sharing violation." I can do "save as" a new file, and any amended notes/changes will show up, but this new file won't allow "save" either if subsequent notes/highlights/etc. are added.
This only happened after the my version of nitroPDF was updated to the latest version.

I also have this problem. The "sharing violation" method normally results in the original file becoming corrupted as well.

Is this caused by the Windows Explorer Pane ? Are you able to try the workarounds and see if this resolves the issue ?
